Transvaginal Mesh Cases Reach Federal Judge

A Federal judge has been selected to reign over four different transvaginal mesh cases against American Medical Systems. American Medical Systems is accused of not adequately providing the warnings associated with the mesh implant. These proceedings will begin in October and span out well into 2014. This news is monumental for thousands of woman who have had the transvaginal mesh implants and have suffered severe side affects. According to court documents, 7,700 claims have been filed against American Medical Systems. All the pending litigation’s claim that the mesh implants caused a variety of severe health complications including chronic infections, organ damage, and mesh erosion and shrinkage.

In 2008, the FDA warned consumers that the mesh had serious complications in more than a thousand cases. Today the FDA warns that it is common for health risks and complications to arise from a transvaginal mesh operation. This is shocking since it has only been five years since the initial warning and the case numbers keep climbing. American Medical Systems is not the only manufacturer of mesh that is keeping the court room warm. Other large companies filing suit are Boston Scientific Corp., C.R. Bard, Inc.,and Ethicon, Inc.

As a woman, this whole transvaginal mesh mess really gets me worried. I sit at my desk listening to clients call each day, crying about the pain that this surgery has caused them both physically and emotionally. A woman called yesterday and was sobbing about how she has to wear diapers and that her husband left her because she could not perform sexually anymore. It breaks my heart that not much research was put into the developing stages of this mesh and that the number of surgeries just keep rising but no changes have been made. I hope for the future that all the pending litigations are resolved and that any future with transvaginal mesh operations is improved or that the patient is educated enough to make a decision for herself.
